What is vocal coaching?

The coaching of a voice is essential to its overall development in the practice room, as well as to execution in performance. What defines “coaching,” though, and what discerns it from teaching? These are questions that deserve the utmost clarification. The main difference is this- voice teachers focus primarily on the improvement of technique, the usage of the instrument. Voice coaches focus on fine-tuning aspects of interpretation; namely, phrasing, pronunciation of text, and performance practices. Simply put, a coach will help the piece be performed, and not to plunk out notes on the piano. Additionally, vocal coaches are usually capable of providing piano accompaniment while you perform your piece, and can collaborate with you to make your piece stand out in a performance setting.

What can Wesley do for you, the performer?

As a performer, I take great pride in the development of my practice. It’s one thing to sing a piece, and do everything that’s on the page correctly. To perform a piece, however, to make the audience feel something because of your delivery; that’s another thing. I want to help in making you the best performer you can be! Together, we’ll tackle many nuances of performance. For example, character analysis- understanding not just who you are, what you’re saying, but why you’re saying/doing the things you are. Posture. The importance and appropriation of gesturing. Having focal points. Proper phrasing. These are just a few of the things we will get into. So much more encompasses being a well-rounded performer, and I will work with you to mold the performance that will command undivided attention! I want to make YOU a better performer, and I will provide nonstop encouragement along the way.
